Why The North York Moors?
The magnificent North York Moors are the largest area of open heather moorland in England and Wales, while its uplands, flanking both sides of the Esk Valley, are perhaps the most beautiful of all. By the end of summer the heather appears as a bedazzling pink and purple carpet stretching as far as the eye can see.
Lose yourself on the moors, either by walking, cycling or driving your own car, and explore remote country lanes which meander through picturesque stone-built Yorkshire villages, or set off along remote footpaths, either along green valley bottoms through isolated farmsteads or climb over high-level riggs to achieve astonishing views as far as the sea.
Afterwards, head down to the Yorkshire coast to enjoy the golden sands of Whitby or Sandsend, and savour dramatic North Sea waves crashing on the rocks below the Jurassic cliffs around Staithes or Saltburn.
At the end of the day, return to your cottage in leisurely fashion by steam train, chugging slowly back over the moors from Whitby in style.
